INTRODUCTION

The 120M Motor Grader has six Electronic Control Modules (ECMs): Engine, Transmission, Implement 1,
Implement 2, All-Wheel Drive, and Messenger. Each ECM other than the messenger generates diagnostic code or
event codes indicating that an ECM has detected an electrical or electronic problem which may affect system
performance. Often, these codes are generated even before the operator notices a difference. If the operator
notices a difference in performance, the diagnostic code may indicate the cause of the problem. Diagnostic and
Event Codes may be retrieved using two methods:
On-board diagnosis using the Messenger module.
MSD.
The Messenger (Figure 1, Item 1) is a monitoring system that displays machine operating information. With the
ignition switch in the ON position (TM 5-3805-293-10) the Messenger will automatically display the Main Menu. If a
diagnostic or event code is active, the diagnostic or event code will be displayed first. Refer to Using the
Messenger in this work package.
