AIR INLET AND EXHAUST SYSTEMSYSTEMS OPERATIONTM 5-3805-263-14&P-2A I R I N L E T A N D E X H A U S T S Y S T E MAIR INLET AND EXHAUST SYSTEMThe air inlet and exhaust system components are:air cleaner, inlet manifold, cylinder head, valves andvalve system components, exhaust manifold andturbocharger.Clean inlet air from the air cleaner is pulledthrough the air inlet (6) of the turbocharger by theturning compressor wheel (4). The compressor wheelcauses a compression of the air. The air then goes tothe inlet manifold (2) of the engine. When the intakevalves open, the air goes into the engine cylinder (3)and is mixed with the fuel for combustion. When theexhaust valves open, the exhaust gases go out of theengine cylinder and into the exhaust manifold (1).From the exhaust manifold, the exhaust gases gothrough the blades of the turbine wheel (5). Thiscauses the turbine wheel and compressor wheel toturn. The exhaust gases then go out the exhaustoutlet (7) of the turbocharger.1-12
