REAR AXLE/DIFFERENTIAL AND LOCK DIFFERENTIAL (Figure 1-32). The differential is mounted to the
forward lower section of the transmission. It provides gear reduction and transfers power through the final drives to the
rear wheels at each side of the vehicle. It allows power to be transmitted equally to both sides even though the wheels on
one side are moving more slowly when the vehicle is turning.
A differential lock-unlock feature includes a hydraulic valve that operates a clutch which causes drive wheels at both sides
to travel at the same speed and pull evenly to reduce slippage.
