Differential and Bevel Gear Adjustment Procedure
1. Before the differential group is installed in the carrier, tighten
nut (8) on the pinion shaft (9) finger tight, and check torque
needed to turn the pinion shaft (any resistance to turning will
be caused by the seal (11) on the pinion shaft). Make a record
of the torque.
2. Tighten nut 18) on the pinion shaft 19) until the torque needed
to turn the pinion shaft is 6 ± 4 lb. in. (0.7 ± 0.5 N.m) more
than the torque found in Step 1.
3. Install the differential group in the carrier and tighten
nuts

4. Put the carrier in a position so the centerline for the axle is
vertical and bevel gear (13) is on the bottom.
5. Make an adjustment to nut (5) until free movement (backlash) be-
tween bevel gear (13) and pinion shaft (9) is .008 + .004 or
-.003 in. (0.20 + 0.10 or -0.08 mm).
6. Tighten nut (12) to be sure the bearing and cager are against
their seats. Loosen nut (12). then finger tighten the nut to
remove end play.
7. Use a dial indicator to measure the amount of change in
dimension (X) when nut (12) is tightened 1 to 2 notches
further after it is finger tight. Dimension (X) must
change by . . . . . . . . . . .
.007 ± .002 in. (0.18 ± 0.05 mm)
Install the locks.
8. Tighten nuts (6) to a
torque of.. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 280 ± 20 lb. ft. (380 ± 25 N.m)
Install the wire.
9. Turn the differential in the carrier and check the free
movement (backlash) again between the bevel gear and the
pinion.
