REPAIR INSTRUCTIONS
000346
1. General.
a. Any repair procedure that pertains to a specific part or component is covered in the work package relating
to that item.
C AU T I O N
Repaired items must be thoroughly cleaned to remove metal chips and abrasives, and to
prevent them from entering working parts of the machine and damaging it.
b. After repair, clean all parts thoroughly to prevent dirt, metal chips, or other foreign material from entering
any working parts.
2. Castings.
a. Only perform minor repairs on machined surfaces, flanges, and gasket mating surfaces. Remove minor
nicks, burrs, and scratches with:
(1) Fine-mill file.
(2) Crocus cloth dipped in solvent cleaning compound.
(3) Lapping across a surface plate.
b. Do not remachine parts to repair damaged, warped, or uneven surfaces. Replace castings.
c.
Repair damaged threaded pipe plug or screw threads using a tap or die. Repair oversized holes with
threaded inserts.
3. Studs.
a. Repair minor thread damage with a thread die.
b. Replace studs with stripped or damaged threads as described below:
(1) Remove using a stud remover. Back out studs slowly to avoid heat buildup and seizure that could
cause stud to break off.
C AU T I O N
If welding method is used, refer to TC 9-237, Operator's Circular Welding Theory and
Application, to avoid damage to castings.
(2) If broken studs are too short to use a stud remover, either use a stud extractor to remove them or use
the "welding method": weld bar stock or a nut to the stud and remove with a wrench.
(3) Install replacement stud slowly to prevent heat buildup and damage.
